An update already...
So, that didn't take long. *teardrop*
I've received some feedback about the endings, and specifically about how it's not merely too easy to get the good ending, but actually too hard to get anything else. So I've retouched the scene in the alleyway slightly, to make it easier to avoid the good ending. (Which sounds bonkers when I put it like that...but there's a lot of story material in the other two endings...)
Primarily, I haven't changed anything other than the scene in the alleyway, so all the old saves that are not in the alley should load just fine. Probably a scene in the alley would still load, too, but it would then give an error due to a new variable having been added. (You might be able to rollback to the previous scene and be okay, though. Maybe. I ought to have made a save in the alley with the old version to test that. Sorry, I'm new to the whole dev thing, and Ren'py is much more touchy than TWINE...)
I probably shouldn't have given the new version a number as high as 1.1--it's more like version 1.01 or something, but I didn't want to start dealing with that many digits. :P
I actually want to go back to the script and re-structure everything , to be honest. I'm still new to writing games, and this is my first attempt at a full, proper visual novel, and I approached writing the script like I approach writing a novel: some planning, but mostly just me behind a keyboard letting the story flow out through my fingers. Which is not really a good plan for a game of the complexity I was going for. (The fact that I was over-complicating some of the under-the-hood stuff does not help that, of course.) I need to figure out the best way to approach the structure--and the paths to the endings--to ensure that everything works more smoothly. And, honestly, there were a lot of things I would have liked to include that I left out at the planning stage, because I was trying to keep it from being too excessively long, due to the game jam time constraints. (But considering how small a role Hector plays currently, that's no good!)
So, eventually, I want to do a complete remake, something that more closely resembles my ideal version of the story. This will probably mean either no longer having Pat as narrator, or spending days (or parts of days) in the narration of other characters. Because A.J. needs a lot more time, and we need to get to know Hector and his siblings.
Which isn't to say that I think the current version is bad. Just that there's a lot more material I would have liked to write for it that I didn't end up writing, and someday I want to remedy that. (But first I have a much simpler game I want to make for the Halloween season, and then I promised myself I was going to get the next novel in the Atalanta and Ariadne series re-written, so...perhaps early next year I might return to this, but it's unlikely to be before that. Though there may be more some cosmetic readjustments in the meantime.)
